Cheadle's Champions
Cheadle Bowls Club was formed as a direct consequence of the first World War. Two committees were organised to prepare for the return of Cheadle men and to honour those who had fallen. The War Memorial Committee was designed for just that, the provision of a fitting memorial. The United Services Committee raised funds to be used appropriately for the men that survived this bitter struggle.
Funds thus raised were used to purchase the six acres of land and the provision of two bowling greens that now constitute the Recreation Ground.
Thus was born the United Services and War Memorial Bowls Club, a title that we still use in any formal communication. Of course, over the years it has inevitably been shortened in practical use to Cheadle Bowls Club.
Cheadle first won the prestigious title of Champions of the North Staffordshire Parks Association in 1952 and in 2002, just fifty years later, we triumphed again, under the captaincy of Michael Hall. Last year Cheadle B C did it again, this time led by Roy Brown, twice in four years, a tremendous achievement.
It seems fitting to record these events in front of the War Memorial. The first picture shows the the two victorious captains holding the Championship Shield, together with Eric Woodward, Harry Smith, Ivan Cope, Baden Mills, Dave Alkins and John Astbury. Unable to attend the photoshoot: Aron Brown, Ken Burnett and Ian Wilcox.
We were honoured to have had the presence of Cheadle Town Mayor Steven Ellis in the second photo that also commemorates the winning of the Thursday Parks 2nd Division Championship - proudly held by by vice-captain Harry Smith. Additional players helping in this success were David Forrester and Bill Shingler. The Captain of the Thursday Parks team, Fred Warburton, has since moved back to his first love Dilhorne B C and Cheadle Bowls Club wish him well.
Also in the second picture are officials Brian Gilman, Secretary, and Arthur Gilbert, President of the Club.
